Are you in the midst of all of the back to school activity, feeling like a machine checking off your to do list? Want to experience back to school with more Joy? Ordering each day “with room” helps manage back to school activity with less stress.
There you are, at your local Starbucks, and you order your coffee “with room” for cream. As you place your order, you remind yourself to make room for Joy in your day too.
I received a challenge recently while attending the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit. The challenge was to live more “Christ-centered.” I’m Catholic, and a Christian, with a strong sense of spirituality, yet I don’t feel like I really let God lead in my life. What could it be like for me if I relaxed a bit, was less in control, and let God take the reins?
The good news is that I’ve been experimenting with this thought and have found that when I make room for God, I experience more Joy!
Getting my children ready to go back to school feels like a three ring circus! With all of the doctor, dental, and orthodontist appointments; school shopping, and supplies, it’s been non-stop activity.
When I opened up this morning’s prayer and the word of the day was Joy, I had to dig deep and ask — “Where’s my joy?”
For me, the feeling of joy is found in the simple moments of the day. Like the moment yesterday, when I was driving along main street and my 13 year-old son shouted “HI, Mommy,” raising his hand excitedly in the midst of a group of friends. Or, when my 11 year-old daughter wanted to sit on my lap in the doctors office and cuddle. I’m grateful that I have “made room” in my life for God and noticing the joy moments. Placing my worries in the hands of the Divine has helped me to find more joy and focus less on all of the things I cannot control.
“You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy.”
—Psalm 16:11
JOY — My joy emanates from the presence of God within.
Try it out. Begin your day asking not only for coffee with room, but life with room for time deepening your relationship with the divine. Let me know if you start noticing the simple moments of joy more. Or, if letting go to a higher power helps you manage the stress of back to school a little better.
